The City of Harare has issued a stern warning to residents about the legal consequences of owning multiple dogs in residential areas. According to the city’s dog control by-laws, it is illegal to own more than two dogs on a property smaller than 2,000 square meters, and even larger properties cannot have more than four dogs.
Properties smaller than 2,000 square meters, such as those in Warren Park, Westlea, Kambuzuma, and Mufakose, are limited to two dogs. Larger residential areas like Highlands, Chisipite, and Shawasha Hills can have up to four dogs. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in a level three fine or imprisonment of up to six months, or both.
In addition to these regulations, dog owners must also secure a permit to own a dog, and breeding dogs within city limits is strictly prohibited. Dog owners must also prevent their pets from roaming freely. The City of Harare is calling for strict adherence to these regulations to ensure community safety and control stray dog populations.
