Three Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers, Constable Tichaona Fitzgerald Chitereka, Sergeant Simbarashe Nyerere, and Constable Pardon Chindudzi, have been arrested for allegedly demanding a US$500 bribe from a stranded bus crew. The officers claimed they were searching for smuggled goods and threatened to impound the bus unless the bribe was paid.

Arrested suspect on handcuffs

The bus conductor reported the extortion attempt to Chief Inspector Maxwell Tomwe, who set a trap using marked money. The officers were caught red-handed during the exchange and immediately arrested. This swift action demonstrates the authorities’ commitment to tackling corruption within the police force.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has urged the public to remain vigilant and report corruption, especially involving law enforcement officials. The public’s cooperation is crucial in rooting out corruption and ensuring that those in positions of authority act with integrity.
