6-Year-Old Boy Killed in Gweru Road Traffic Incident

A tragic road traffic incident occurred in Gweru on Saturday, 24 May 2025, resulting in the death of a six-year-old boy, Shayne Mafu. The boy was struck by a refuse collection truck operated by Gweru City Council at around 11:00 a.m. in the Clifton Park high-density suburb. The truck was being driven by Phillip Makotore, aged 58, who was reportedly heading towards Clifton Park at the time of the accident.

Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident and stated that the boy died on the spot. His body was taken to the Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary. The police are currently conducting thorough investigations to gather evidence for a possible charge of culpable homicide against the driver.

Authorities are still working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal crash. Both the police and Gweru City Council have acknowledged the gravity of the incident, and the community is mourning the loss of the young boy. Inspector Mahoko emphasized that police in Gweru are investigating the fatal road traffic accident and are committed to establishing all relevant facts and determining accountability. The case remains under investigation.
