Denilson Cyprianos is a Zimbabwean swimmer born on October 7, 2002, in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. He specializes in backstroke events and has become one of Zimbabwe’s leading swimmers. Cyprianos made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by becoming the first black male swimmer to represent Zimbabwe at the Olympic Games. He competed in the men’s 200m backstroke, setting a new national and personal record with a time of 2:01.91, surpassing his previous record of 2:01.96 set at the African Games. Cyprianos began swimming at a young age and was named captain of Zimbabwe Swimming in 2020. He holds the fastest Zimbabwean times in the 100m and 200m backstroke events. His achievements include winning gold at the 2024 African Games, where he was one of Zimbabwe’s top performers and also the first black male swimmer to represent Zimbabwe at the continental event.

He is currently based in the United States, where he has been training and fine-tuning his skills. Despite not advancing beyond the heats at the Olympics, his participation was a significant milestone, inspiring many young black swimmers in Zimbabwe and beyond. Cyprianos encourages young athletes to believe in their dreams and work hard to achieve them, aiming ultimately to win an Olympic medal. Cyprianos has competed in various international competitions, including the African Games, CANA African Senior Swimming Championships, and South African National Junior Championships, holding multiple national records across freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and medley events.

He attended Christian Brothers College in Bulawayo and is a graduate student majoring in Operations. He has also been part of the Carson Newman Athletics swimming team in the United States.
