Zimbabwe is among 36 countries whose citizens may face travel restrictions to the United States due to alleged identity documentation fraud and visa violations. According to a memo signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, these countries have 60 days to implement new rules set by the State Department or risk facing possible visa limits, travel bans, or other measures.
The State Department cited concerns over some countries’ inability to meet certain standards, lack of competent central government authority to issue trusted identity documents, and a large number of citizens violating visa terms. The list includes 25 African countries, four Caribbean nations, four Asian countries, and three Pacific island nations. Zimbabwe, along with these other countries, has until the specified deadline to submit a plan on how it will meet the new requirements.
It remains unclear whether the new travel limits will take effect after the deadline. The move is part of the US government’s broader immigration plan, which includes stricter vetting and screening procedures. The development comes a week after the US reinstated a travel ban affecting certain countries, and follows an executive order aimed at tightening immigration policies.
