Former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi has told the Harare magistrate court that his three warrants of arrest should be cancelled due to health reasons. Mzembi revealed that he had cancer and travelled abroad for treatment in 2018. His lawyer, Killian Mandiki, argued that Mzembi had applied for his passport on medical grounds and that the state would not suffer any prejudice if the warrants were cancelled.
Mandiki further submitted that Mzembi is ready to defend himself against allegations of criminal abuse of office and suggested that the court could order him to surrender his passport as a condition. This, he argued, would ensure Mzembi’s availability for trial while also addressing his health needs. The defense team’s written submissions aim to persuade the court to grant Mzembi the relief he seeks.
The case is set to proceed with the acting deputy prosecutor-general, Tendai Shonhayi, submitting written responses by the close of business on Monday. Mzembi is expected back in court, where the magistrate will consider the arguments from both sides before making a decision on the warrants of arrest.
