A woman from Warren Park has taken one of her three husbands to court, accusing him of neglecting his responsibilities, emotionally abusing the household, and failing to support their child. Ms Sekai Makanya appeared before Harare Civil Court magistrate Johanna Mukwesha, seeking a protection order against Mr Tapera Mapfumo the biological father of her child and one of the men in her rare polyandrous marriage. Makanya told the court that Mapfumo had failed to provide for their child and refused to contribute meaningfully to the shared household. She further alleged that he became verbally abusive and physically aggressive whenever she questioned his commitment.

“My husband is not fulfilling his duties, and when I confront him, he becomes violent,” she said. “He doesn’t pay school fees or provide for our child. He expects me to do everything.” She also accused Mapfumo of public humiliation, claiming he falsely accused her of theft at her workplace and told her colleagues that stolen items were hidden at his house. Efforts to resolve the issues through family mediation reportedly failed, prompting Makanya to seek legal recourse. The court heard that tensions among the multiple partners had worsened due to Mapfumo’s alleged refusal to carry his share of responsibilities in the unconventional household.

Makanya insisted that her other husbands should not be burdened with supporting a child who is not theirs especially when the biological father is still alive and had willingly entered into the polyandrous union. “I cannot ask my other husbands to care for a child that’s not theirs. Mapfumo agreed to this marriage, fathered a child, and must take responsibility,” she added. In his defense, Mr Mapfumo denied the accusations and claimed he was being unfairly treated within the household. “She has three husbands and expects me to handle everything,” he said. “She enjoys male attention. I feel like a servant in that house. At one point, she even threw out my belongings  things I bought myself.”

Mapfumo also claimed he does support his child and accused Makanya of assaulting him in public and using manipulation to control the home environment. Despite denying the neglect and abuse allegations, he expressed interest in pursuing counselling to resolve their disputes. The magistrate reserved judgment, requesting further submissions from both sides. The case has attracted widespread attention due to its unique circumstances, underscoring the complex and legally unrecognised nature of polyandrous unions in Zimbabwe.
