#MCM: Brian Chikwava – Writer

Our #MCM today is Brian Chikwava, a celebrated Zimbabwean writer and musician known for his groundbreaking work in African literature. Born in 1971 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Chikwava’s journey into the world of writing began at a young age. He attended boarding school in Bulawayo before pursuing a degree in civil engineering at Bristol University in the UK.

After settling in London in 2004, Chikwava’s literary career took off. He won the prestigious Caine Prize for African Writing in 2004 with his short story “Seventh Street Alchemy,” which was published in “Writing Still” by Weaver Press in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 2003. This achievement marked a significant milestone, making him the first Zimbabwean to receive the award. The judges praised his unique narrative voice, noting that he claimed the English language as his own, infusing it with African characteristics.

Chikwava’s debut novel, “Harare North,” was published in 2009 by Jonathan Cape. The book received widespread critical acclaim for its vivid portrayal of the immigrant experience in London. Reviewers praised Chikwava’s innovative use of language, which blended pidgin English with African nuances, creating a distinctive narrative voice. Mary Fitzgerald of the New Statesman noted that Chikwava opened up a “bleak, yet urgently important, social landscape” in his writing.

One of the most striking aspects of Chikwava’s work is his ability to find humor and lightness in the darkest of situations. His writing is characterized by a unique blend of wit, suggestiveness, and creativity, making his stories both haunting and exciting. Critics have praised his talent for crafting compelling protagonists and narratives that grip readers from start to finish.

In addition to his literary pursuits, Chikwava is also a talented musician. He has released an album titled “Jacaranda Skits,” showcasing his versatility as an artist. His work has been recognized beyond literary circles, with features in prominent publications and participation in projects like the Bush Theatre’s “Sixty Six Books” in 2011.
