Harare regional magistrate Donald Ndirowei has dismissed former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi’s application challenging his placement on remand. The court instructed Mzembi to return on Friday for trial date allocation, following confirmation of three outstanding warrants of arrest issued after his failure to appear in court since November 2018.

Mzembi’s lawyer, Killian Mandiki, had argued that his client’s absence was due to poor health, but the magistrate found the explanation lacking. Medical reports submitted did not convincingly justify Mzembi’s prolonged absence, and the court noted that he remained politically active during the period he claimed to be unwell.

The ruling has intensified scrutiny over Mzembi’s conduct and revived debate around the political context of his legal troubles. While Mzembi maintains the charges are politically motivated, the court emphasized accountability and dismissed attempts to cancel the warrants, setting the stage for trial proceedings.
