Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa has rubbished reports that tycoon Kudakwashe Tagwirei is eyeing the party presidency, declaring him unfit for top office. At a press conference in Harare, Mutsvangwa revealed that Tagwirei’s bid to join the central committee had failed after the party ruled he did not meet the eligibility criteria. He also took aim at Tagwirei’s alleged tactic of winning loyalty through lavish handouts, warning that such methods don’t guarantee leadership.

Mutsvangwa said Zanu PF values long-term commitment over quick influence, citing his own decades-long journey in the party. He mocked the idea that wealth could buy power, saying elections are decided by Zimbabwe’s masses—not by party elites or cash. “Try buying all the voters,” he quipped, adding that the party cannot afford to field candidates who lack grassroots appeal.
As President Mnangagwa nears retirement in 2028, Tagwirei is seen as an emerging figure—but not without controversy. Both Mutsvangwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga have voiced opposition to the businessman, with Chiwenga branding him and others like him as “parasites” feeding off the state. Chiwenga remains the frontrunner in the race to lead Zanu PF.
