SA Court Seizes Cash and SUV From Zimbabwean Over Suspicious Funds

A Zimbabwean man travelling through Musina, South Africa, has lost R446,000 in cash and a Toyota Fortuner after failing to provide a credible explanation for the money discovered during a police stop-and-search operation in July 2024. The cash, found hidden in a plastic bag beneath blankets in the SUV’s boot, led to his immediate arrest by officers from the South African Police Service.

Following an investigation by the Hawks’ Asset Forfeiture Investigation (AFI) unit and the National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU), a preservation order was granted in February 2025. The Limpopo High Court finalised a forfeiture order in late July 2025, authorising the seizure of the cash and vehicle. The funds have since been deposited into the Criminal Asset Recovery Account, and the Fortuner is scheduled for auction.

The case draws parallels with another financial seizure in March 2025, when a 49-year-old man was apprehended in Tonga View, Mpumalanga, with R1.2 million in mixed currency, including Mozambican notes. Authorities discovered the stash hidden under a bed and inside a wardrobe, and the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe police officers with R50,000. Both incidents highlight the intensified efforts under Operation Vala Umgodi to curb cross-border financial crimes.
