A nine-year-old boy was tragically killed in Darwendale last month after being mauled by four dogs while playing football with friends at Bornvalley Farm. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the attack occurred on 17 July, when the dogs, believed to be boerboels, allegedly escaped from their owner’s property and chased the children. Shelton Panganai was cornered and fatally attacked near a gum tree plantation. Authorities have since put down the animals.

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated that the boy had been playing soccer with other children when the dogs broke loose, prompting chaos as the youngsters fled in different directions. In response to growing public concern, the ZRP emphasized that the incident is being treated with full seriousness. Social media users had voiced fears that justice would not be served, but police assured the public that the matter is under thorough investigation.

The dogs’ owner, identified as Mark Masendeke Magede, has been arrested in connection with the fatal mauling. Police are investigating the circumstances under which the dogs escaped and attacked the children. Nyathi reaffirmed that the case will be handled in accordance with Zimbabwean law, dismissing claims that the incident might be ignored.
