Police in Harare have intensified efforts to locate a suspect accused of raping a 13-year-old student aboard a bus at the Rezende bus terminus earlier this week. The incident has sparked outrage and concern over public safety in the capital’s busy transport hubs. Authorities say the assault occurred while the victim was traveling alone, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the investigation and emphasized the seriousness of the case. He also revealed that more than 14,686 individuals have been arrested this year in a nationwide crackdown targeting illegal transport operators, many of whom operate in unregulated and unsafe conditions. The link between unlicensed transport and rising crime rates remains a growing concern.

Police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying and locating the suspect. Citizens are urged to report any suspicious behavior, particularly in high-traffic areas such as bus termini. The incident has reignited calls for tighter security measures and improved surveillance in public transport zones to protect vulnerable commuters.
