Dzivaresekwa Woman Arrested for Allegedly Killing Newborn

A 39-year-old woman from Dzivaresekwa 2, Harare, has been arrested after allegedly strangling her newborn baby in an attempt to conceal her pregnancy. According to sources, the woman gave birth alone in her room during the early hours of the morning. Her brother, alerted by the sound of the baby crying, entered the room and discovered her in visible distress, with the lifeless infant placed in a bucket.

The woman had reportedly misled her family, claiming she was suffering from fibroids and acid-related complications to explain her swollen abdomen. Upon discovering the truth, her brother pretended to take her for medical treatment but instead drove her to the police station. Authorities have since taken both the woman and the deceased infant into custody.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which has shocked residents of Nhewe Street. Community members expressed disbelief, with many calling for mental health support and stronger awareness around reproductive health and crisis pregnancy interventions.
