
Ziweya Leeroy, a 22-year-old Zimbabwean student studying Radiology at Guru Kashi University in Punjab, India, tragically died on August 21, 2025, eight days after being violently attacked outside the university campus. The attack followed a dispute with a university security guard.
On August 13, Leeroy was ambushed and severely beaten by the security guard along with several other men. According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary police reports, the assault was unprovoked and extremely brutal, leading to serious head injuries. He was rushed to AIIMS Bathinda for emergency treatment but succumbed to his injuries after eight days in critical condition.
The local police have arrested seven suspects connected to the violent assault, including the university security guard. Authorities are actively pursuing two additional individuals believed to be involved. Following further investigations, the police escalated the charges from assault to murder in light of the severity of injuries and Leeroy’s subsequent death.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the international student community in India, particularly among Zimbabwean students studying abroad, who have expressed deep concern over their safety and well-being.
