Two men—one Zimbabwean and one South African—were arrested on August 26, 2025, in connection with the possession of illicit cigarettes in Polokwane. Acting on a tip-off, law enforcement intercepted a Toyota Corolla traveling along the N1 highway, where the contraband was discovered.

Inside the vehicle, police recovered 19 cases and 47 cartons of Remington Gold cigarettes, with an estimated street value of R120,000. The cigarettes, believed to have been smuggled across the border, were concealed in the boot and rear seats of the car. Authorities suspect the operation is part of a larger network trafficking illegal tobacco products between Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Both suspects are expected to appear in court this week. Investigators are continuing to probe the origins of the shipment and whether additional accomplices are involved. The bust underscores ongoing efforts by South African police to clamp down on cross-border smuggling and illicit trade.
