The Highfield community is deeply shaken following the death of 12-year-old Anesu Mudzukuri, a Grade Seven pupil at Houghton Park Primary School, who took her own life on August 15, 2025, in a cabin at her family home. Anesu, who was a prefect at her school and the second-born in a family of four children, was laid to rest at Zororo Cemetery along Seke Road.
Her sudden passing has left her family, teachers, and classmates traumatized. Family spokesperson Tapiwa Mudzukira described Anesu as a bright, prayerful child whose future held much promise. “We have lost a daughter who was promising to change our life. She was brilliant and prayerful,” he said.
According to the family, Anesu had just returned from school and was preparing to travel to a church conference the following day when tragedy struck. She asked her sister to help find a rope and was later found hanging in the cabin. This incident has had a profound emotional impact on her sister and family members. The police required forensic tests before the post-mortem, delaying the burial. However, initial suspicions of abuse were dismissed after the tests showed no evidence.
During the burial, Mr. Muzenda, headmaster of Houghton Park Primary, led teachers and pupils in paying tribute to Anesu. He described her as one of the school’s top learners. “We have lost one of the best prefects, a student who obtained eight Units last term,” he said. “Her teacher described her as quiet, someone who never shared her problems. We are yet to accept that all her zeal, knowledge, and dedication are to be buried just like that.”
Anesu’s tragic death has sent shockwaves through her school community and the broader Highfield neighborhood as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of a promising young life.
This article captures the details of the event, the impact on the community, and the legacy Anesu leaves behind.
