Zimbabwe has reintroduced a ban on maize imports following a strong domestic harvest that has met national milling requirements, according to a senior official from the Ministry of Agriculture. The move is aimed at protecting local farmers and reducing reliance on foreign grain, particularly genetically modified maize, which had been imported during last year’s drought.

The country’s maize output rebounded sharply this season, driven by improved rainfall and favorable growing conditions. This marks a significant recovery from the previous year, when an El Niño-induced drought severely impacted yields and forced the government to source maize from regional and international suppliers to meet demand.

Authorities say the import ban will remain in place as long as local production continues to meet national needs. The policy is expected to stabilize the agricultural sector, encourage self-sufficiency, and support Zimbabwe’s broader efforts to strengthen food security through climate-resilient farming practices.
