The Karoi community in Mashonaland West is grappling with the devastating news of two women who took their own lives on the same day, last Monday, in the densely populated Chikangwe high-density suburb. Provincial police spokesman, Inspector Ian Kohwera, confirmed the incidents. He reported that Theresa Gurajena, aged 40, residing at House Number 537, was found dead on the morning of August 25, 2025. Her body was discovered hanging from a beam in her bedroom by a relative, Hilda Gurajena, aged 72, who promptly reported the matter to the police. The investigation into her death is ongoing.
Later the same day, at 5 p.m., another tragic suicide unfolded when 19-year-old Chipo Gambiza, who lived at House Number 523 in the same neighborhood, was found hanging from a roof truss using a cloth by her husband, Lawrence Matashu. This case has also been reported to the police, with investigations underway. The two incidents have sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting an urgent need for awareness and intervention regarding mental health and social challenges within Karoi.
The cases form part of a wider worrying trend in the area, where drug and substance abuse have been cited as contributing factors to the rise in suicides, especially among youths and women. Authorities are appealing for community involvement in combating these vices to prevent further tragedies. The Zimbabwe Republic Police continue to investigate these cases as they seek to unravel the underlying causes and provide support to the affected families.
