Opposition leader Job Sikhala’s residence in Ruwa was bombed around 1 a.m. while he was in South Africa for a scheduled book launch. His wife was away attending a memorial service in their rural village, leaving only their children—Job Jnr, Ramaloka, Melody, Joshua, and Fidel—at home during the attack. Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) swiftly responded to the scene, with homicide detectives currently securing the area and awaiting the military bomb disposal unit to remove unexploded dynamite reportedly used in the assault.

Sikhala, who confirmed the incident via social media, described the attack as cowardly and called it an act of terrorism targeting his family. He urged all Zimbabweans to condemn the violence and emphasized the importance of his children cooperating fully with investigators. The motive behind the bombing remains unclear, but the incident has sparked widespread concern amid rising political tensions and fears of targeted intimidation.

The bombing comes at a time when Sikhala has been increasingly vocal in his criticism of the ruling party and its alleged efforts to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028. Sikhala, who spent nearly two years in pre-trial detention before his release in early 2024, has positioned himself as a leading figure in the opposition’s push for democratic reform. Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the suspects or possible political links to the attack.
