The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) is thrilled to announce a special luxury Rail Leisure train service operating between Harare and Mutare to coincide with the 18th Edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Tourism Expo 2025. This initiative, themed “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development Our Future,” is a collaborative effort between NRZ, the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry (MoTHI), and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA).
Designed to enhance the expo experience and promote sustainable tourism, the luxury train boasts a capacity of 243 passengers and has been refurbished at NRZ’s Bulawayo mechanical workshops. Passengers will enjoy smooth and scenic rides on a fully rehabilitated railway line, showcasing the breathtaking natural beauty of Zimbabwe between Harare and Mutare.
The inaugural journey will depart from Harare at 7:00 AM on September 5, 2025, with subsequent departures on September 7 and 9. Return trips from Mutare back to Harare are scheduled for September 6 and 8, also departing at 7:00 AM. Additionally, a special overnight service will depart Mutare at 8:00 PM on September 12. No train runs will occur on September 10 and 11, which are reserved for local excursions in Mutare.
The Rail Leisure service offers a unique opportunity for local, regional, and international exhibitors, buyers, media personnel, and Zimbabwean citizens to experience luxury travel by rail, complete with entertainment and refreshments onboard. All trips are affordably priced at $60 one way, providing convenient access to the expo and encouraging wider participation.
NRZ invites everyone to make use of this pioneering service and looks forward to welcoming passengers on board. While this initiative is specially tailored for the tourism expo, plans for further collaborations and expanded luxury rail services are already being explored to build on the success of this event.
