Gweru Man Sentenced to Six Years for Stabbing Passerby Over Cigarette Dispute

A 19-year-old man from Gweru has been sentenced to six years in prison after stabbing a passerby who refused to share a cigarette. Nation Muyashu, who faced an attempted murder charge, appeared before the Gweru Magistrates Court in Midlands province on Monday for sentencing.

Muyashu received a nine-year jail term, with three years suspended on the condition of good behaviour for the next five years. This means he will serve an effective six years behind bars.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on July 16, 2025, in the Mahamara area of Lalapanzi. Muyashu was walking with his girlfriend when he encountered the victim, Simon Ngazimbi. A dispute escalated after Ngazimbi refused to share a cigarette, prompting Muyashu to attack him, resulting in serious injuries.

The court’s ruling serves as a stern reminder of the consequences of violent behaviour, emphasizing the importance of peaceful conflict resolution within the community.
