#WCW : Felisitus Kwangwa – Netball Player

Felisitus Kwangwa, born on March 9, 1995, in Njube, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, is a prominent Zimbabwean netball player and the current captain of the Zimbabwe national netball team. She plays in the position of goal defense and has made significant strides in her sporting career, both locally and internationally. Kwangwa was introduced to netball at the age of 10 while attending Mtshede Primary School in Bulawayo. Although she was also excelling in football and athletics during her youth, her talent and passion for netball quickly stood out. By the age of 17, she was part of the junior national team, the “Junior Gems,” and earned her first senior cap at 19 against Zambia. She rose rapidly through the ranks to become the captain of the Zimbabwe national team by the age of 23.

Her leadership was instrumental during Zimbabwe’s historic debut at the 2019 Netball World Cup, where the team finished in eighth place. Felisitus was one of the standout players, earning three Player of the Match awards and serving as vice captain during the tournament. After the retirement of former captain Perpetua Siyachitema, Felisitus was appointed captain in September 2019 and led the team in subsequent competitions, including the 2019 African Netball Championships. Kwangwa’s performances earned her a place in the UK’s Vitality Netball Superleague, where she plays for the Surrey Storm. She became the first Zimbabwean to play in this league, showcasing her talents on an international stage and furthering her reputation as a defensive powerhouse.

Beyond her sporting accomplishments, Felisitus Kwangwa holds an honors degree in economic history from the University of Zimbabwe. She is a passionate advocate for women’s sports and sees netball as a unifying force that promotes female participation in athletics across Africa. As the captain leading her team into the 2023 Netball World Cup held in Cape Town, South Africa, Kwangwa remains committed to improving Zimbabwe’s standing in international netball and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
