Our #MCM today is Lovemore Mukono, a technologist and entrepreneur from Tanda, Makoni District in Eastern Zimbabwe. He is the only boy in a family of three children and draws inspiration from his late mother. His drive is fueled by a competitive spirit, which began in his school days and evolved into a desire to compete with the likes of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

Mukono’s journey began after he resigned from a comfortable job to fulfill a promise to his parents. In 1990, he co-founded Mukonitronics with Gift Mujeni. His vision was to create a leading innovation center and a giant manufacturing company, spearheading Africa’s technology renaissance and providing jobs for Zimbabwean engineers.

The company faced significant challenges early on, as clients were hesitant to trust a new local brand. However, after successfully convincing one client to try their product, the M-Tron, the company gained traction. Mukonitronics was recognized for its success, winning the ZNCC Zimbabwe Exporter of the Year in 1998 and a runner-up spot in 1999.

Mukonitronics developed the M-Tron Surge Protector to combat the unstable power and high lightning densities in Southern Africa. The company’s most popular products also include M-Tron Inverters, UPSs, and unique, energy-saving fluorescent lights. These products were designed to withstand harsh African conditions and provide a more reliable and cost-effective alternative to generators.

During Zimbabwe’s hyperinflationary decade (2000-2009), Mukonitronics focused on bolstering its technology and redesigning products. The company also resorted to barter trade to maintain value. This difficult period strengthened the company, making it more agile and prepared for complex business transactions.

Mukono is a strong advocate for African innovation and self-reliance, believing the continent must move beyond aid and value-add its raw materials. He champions a technopreneurship education model that combines technical and managerial skills. He serves on the board of the Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre (SIRDC) and is involved with the SETA Foundation, which aims to empower African youth with practical, productivity-focused training.
