In a decisive move to combat the rise of violent crimes involving unregistered firearms, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a national firearms amnesty allowing members of the public to voluntarily surrender unlicensed firearms and ammunition to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) without fear of prosecution. The amnesty period runs from September 24 to October 24, 2025.

The announcement, made by Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the ZRP spokesperson, highlights the urgent need to address the growing abuse of firearms, often unregistered, which have been linked to heinous crimes including murder and armed robbery. The amnesty aims to remove these illegal weapons from circulation and reduce crime rates.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi explained that many individuals continue to hold firearms despite changes in ownership status such as company closures or the death of the licensed holder, contributing to the surge in firearm-related crimes. The police have also found that licensed firearm holders often neglect to renew certificates or secure their weapons properly, leading to theft and misuse.

The amnesty also covers institutions like licensed gun dealers and clubs who may possess unclaimed or illegally acquired firearms, offering them a legal avenue to comply. Those surrendering firearms will receive an official safe custody receipt from the police as proof of compliance.

The ZRP has issued a stern warning that after the deadline of October 24, physical checks and legal actions will be taken against those found in possession of illegal firearms. The police urge all citizens to use this opportunity to ensure their firearm ownership is legal and properly documented. This initiative aligns with regional efforts under the SADC Protocol on Firearms Control aimed at curbing illegal firearm possession and enhancing public safety in Zimbabwe.
