On 21 September 2019, Robert Mugabe was buried in Kutama, his home village in Zvimba District. The burial followed a dispute between the Zimbabwean government and Mugabe’s family, who rejected plans to lay him to rest at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.

Mugabe died in Singapore on 6 September 2019 at age 95. His state funeral drew leaders from across Africa, but his final resting place was a private, rural site—reflecting his personal wishes and family insistence.

The decision marked a symbolic shift. Instead of a state-sanctioned monument, Mugabe’s grave now lies among village paths and banana trees, closing the chapter on a complex legacy with quiet defiance.
