NoViolet Bulawayo, a Zimbabwean writer, was awarded the 2025 Best of Caine Award, a special honorary prize by the UK-based Caine Prize for African Writing to mark its 25th anniversary. This award recognizes the most outstanding winner in the Prize’s history and was given to Bulawayo for her short story “Hitting Budapest,” which originally won the Caine Prize in 2011. The story, narrated from the perspective of a young girl named Darling, portrays six impoverished children who sneak into a wealthy neighborhood called Budapest to steal guavas. It captures the juxtaposition of childhood innocence and the harsh realities of poverty, evoking a childhood vision with a powerful voice.

“Hitting Budapest” later became the opening chapter of Bulawayo’s debut novel We Need New Names, which, along with her later novel Glory, was shortlisted for the prestigious Booker Prize. Bulawayo’s storytelling, recognized for its innovative form and vivid portrayal of social inequalities, has sparked discussions on the aesthetic values of African literature and its global reception. The Best of Caine Award not only celebrates her individual achievement but also highlights her lasting impact on African literature, inspiring readers and emerging writers across the continent.

The award decision was unanimous and swift by a panel chaired by Nobel laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah, who praised the story’s strong voice and evocative portrayal of childhood. The Caine Prize itself has been a significant platform promoting African short stories written in English and nurturing new African literary voices for 25 years, helping to spotlight authors who might not have gained international recognition otherwise. Bulawayo’s accolade reaffirmed her as one of Africa’s most remarkable literary talents whose work resonates beyond the prize context.
