Pastor Charles Charamba released his debut gospel album “Tinashe Akatendeka” in 1997, a milestone that marked the beginning of a new era in Zimbabwean gospel music. Born in 1971 in Mudzi District, Charamba was raised with a strong Christian faith which deeply influenced his music career. Unlike other gospel music of the time, which was slow and somber, Charamba innovated by blending gospel lyrics with upbeat sungura, jazz, and jit rhythms, giving birth to a lively and unique gospel sound. This creative risk initially met resistance from record labels; Gramma Records was hesitant but eventually released his music after encouragement from veteran producer Bothwell Nyamondera.

Before the album launch, Charamba recorded several singles starting in 1993, gradually building recognition. “Tinashe Akatendeka” featured hit tracks like “Mhinduro Iripo” and quickly gained popularity partly due to its fresh sound and also the compelling music video of “Mhinduro Iripo.” The album set Charamba apart in Zimbabwe’s music scene, which in the 1990s was dominated by iconic artists like Leonard Dembo and Oliver Mtukudzi. Despite the competition, Charamba’s ability to sustain popularity led him to become one of Zimbabwe’s top-selling gospel artists, alongside his wife Olivia Charamba, who is also a celebrated gospel singer.

His journey was one of perseverance; multiple demo tapes were rejected before he got signed, and he had to work hard to establish gospel music as a respected genre in the local industry. The success of “Tinashe Akatendeka” laid the foundation for his long career, winning numerous awards and influencing generations of gospel artists. Beyond music, Charamba pursued formal education in theology and music, obtaining degrees that enriched his artistry and ministry. Today, the album “Tinashe Akatendeka” is remembered not only for its musical innovation but also for the role it played in shaping modern gospel music in Zimbabwe. It represents the legacy of a man who refused to conform to norms and instead created music that was joyful, spiritually uplifting, and culturally resonant
