Our #MCM today is David Mwanaka, a Zimbabwean farmer whose journey from Harare to becoming a pioneering figure in British agriculture inspires many. Growing up in Zimbabwe, he was deeply connected to farming and the cultural importance of white maize, a staple that carries strong roots in African life and tradition.

Before farming, David was a journalist in Zimbabwe, covering important social issues during challenging times. In 1991, seeking better opportunities, he moved to the UK with a vision: to bring the taste of home to Africans living abroad. Little did he know that this dream would lead him to make history.
Starting with a small allotment in North London, David faced many challenges trying to grow white maize in a foreign climate. After six years of persistence, he succeeded in 2003, becoming the first African to grow white maize in the UK. This breakthrough allowed the African diaspora to enjoy fresh maize without relying on imports.

David and his wife Brenda turned their passion into Mwanaka Fresh Farm Foods. Their business grew, opening shops in Enfield and Walsall, and eventually securing a 500-acre farm in Cambridgeshire. Today, his farm supplies major UK retailers, offering a wide range of African vegetables and ethically sourced produce.
His impact goes beyond farming. David has become a cultural icon for Africans in the UK. His story has been featured by the BBC, The Guardian, and documentaries. In 2025, Princess Anne visited his farm, recognizing his contributions to British agriculture and community.

David Mwanaka stands as a symbol of resilience, innovation, and pride. He shows that with determination, one can bridge cultures and grow something meaningful anywhere. That’s why he’s our #MCM—a true pioneer and inspiration.
