#DidYouKnow: Zimbabwe’s historic entry into space was led by Kudzanayi Kuhamba, a young engineer from Chitungwiza who helped design and build ZimSat-1, the country’s first satellite. Launched into orbit on November 7, 2022 from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, ZimSat-1 marked a major milestone in Zimbabwe’s scientific development. Kuhamba was part of the BIRDS-5 project at Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan, where he collaborated with engineers from Uganda and Zambia to build nanosatellites for their respective countries.

Kuhamba’s journey from local schools to international space labs reflects a new era of African innovation. With degrees in Applied Physics, Communication Engineering, and Space Systems, he became Zimbabwe’s first graduate of the CanSat Leadership Program and later founded Stellar Aspirations, a space education initiative aimed at underserved communities. His work has earned him recognition as an Africa Space Leader and a national coordinator for World Space Week Zimbabwe.

Beyond engineering, Kuhamba is a passionate advocate for space literacy. He has published educational materials, led outreach programs, and spoken at global forums to inspire young Africans to pursue careers in science and technology. His story is a testament to what’s possible when talent meets opportunity — and a reminder that Zimbabwe’s future may be written among the stars.
