#WCW: Vimbai Masiyiwa – Entrepreneur

3 Min Read

Our #WCW today is Vimbai Masiyiwa, a Zimbabwean entrepreneur whose journey blends resilience, innovation, and elegance. Born into one of Africa’s most influential families, she is the daughter of Econet founder Strive Masiyiwa and philanthropist Tsitsi Masiyiwa. From an early age, Vimbai was immersed in business and leadership, interning for her father at just 14 and later serving as his special assistant. Her upbringing across Zimbabwe, South Africa, and the UK shaped a global perspective that now defines her work.

Vimbai holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from Bryant University and a Master’s in Entrepreneurship from University College London. Her academic path was interrupted when she was diagnosed with lymphoma—a battle she faced with remarkable strength. A persistent dry cough led to the discovery of a tumour the size of a tennis ball in her chest. She suspended her studies for a year to undergo treatment, emerging with renewed purpose and clarity.

She is now the Chief Executive Officer of Batoka Hospitality Group, a luxury eco-tourism and community development company she co-founded with her mother. Under her leadership, Batoka acquired Gorges Lodge, Little Gorges, and Zambezi Sands in Victoria Falls. In March 2022, the group unveiled the refurbished Batoka Zambezi Sands River Lodge, a high-end safari destination on the banks of the Zambezi River. The lodge was developed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting her boldness and vision.

Beyond business, Vimbai is a vocal advocate for women’s empowerment and African creativity. Batoka’s projects are rooted in community-led initiatives, with a focus on uplifting women in rural areas. Her passion for fashion is equally notable—she champions African designers and was named one of the UK’s Best Dressed Women in 2022 by Tatler magazine, alongside Kate Middleton. She continues to call for greater investment in African fashion to unlock global opportunities.

Vimbai’s leadership style is grounded in purpose and precision. She transitioned fully into her role at Batoka nearly two years ago, leaving behind her position with her father to chart her own path. Her work blends luxury with impact, creating spaces that celebrate African heritage while driving sustainable development. Her lodges are not just destinations—they are platforms for storytelling, empowerment, and transformation.

Today, Vimbai Masiyiwa is based between the UK and the US, but her heart remains firmly rooted in Zimbabwe. Her story is one of courage, intellect, and cultural pride. From surviving cancer to redefining African hospitality, she stands as a beacon of what it means to lead with grace and grit.
