Zimbabwean police have arrested three suspects linked to a widespread cyber fraud operation that exploited identity theft and SIM card manipulation to siphon thousands of dollars from victims across the country. Tranos Taurai Muzanenhamo (27), Rumbidzai Tsongora (24), and Bradwell Shangwa (25) were apprehended on October 31 at a lodge in Shurugwi. Authorities say the trio is connected to at least 29 cases of cyber-related fraud affecting individuals in Harare, Bulawayo, and other towns.

According to police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the suspects allegedly harvested personal data through phishing schemes, data breaches, and public records. They then used the stolen information to impersonate victims and secure SIM card replacements, gaining access to mobile money wallets, bank accounts, and WhatsApp profiles. This allowed them to transfer funds and solicit money from victims’ contacts under false pretenses

A search of the suspects’ vehicle, a Toyota Mark X, uncovered multiple SIM cards, fake identity documents, bank cards, cellphones, a Starlink internet device, and a pair of handcuffs. The estimated value of the fraud stands at USD17,009.50 and ZWG30,665,912.30. Police say investigations are ongoing and additional charges may be filed as the case develops.
