Our #WCW today is Dr. Tendai Masunda Zengeni, a trailblazing Zimbabwean academic and technologist whose journey from humble beginnings to global recognition is a testament to resilience, brilliance, and purpose. As Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering and Computer Science at Africa University, she stands at the forefront of digital innovation and higher education in Zimbabwe, shaping the next generation of tech leaders.

Dr. Zengeni’s academic path began with a deep fascination for physics and engineering, which led her to pursue advanced studies in Fiber Optics and Nanophotonics. She earned her PhD from Universiti Utara Malaysia, where she also served as a Senior Research Assistant at the Optical Technology Research Laboratory. Her work there connected her to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), marking a significant milestone in her international research career.

Her expertise spans Optical Fiber Communications, Mode Division Multiplexing, and Photonic Crystal Fiber — fields critical to the future of high-speed internet and data transmission. She has authored nine international journal publications and presented at numerous academic conferences. Her research excellence was recognized with the Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Photonics in 2018, and she received the Vice Chancellor’s Postgraduate Scholarship during her doctoral studies.

Beyond academia, Dr. Zengeni has emerged as a national leader in technology governance. In 2023, she was appointed Vice Chairperson of the Board of Directors at NetOne Cellular, Zimbabwe’s state-owned mobile network operator. Her role bridges policy, innovation, and infrastructure, reinforcing her commitment to expanding digital access and connectivity across underserved communities.

A passionate advocate for ethical AI and digital inclusion, Dr. Zengeni is a 2024 African Women in Tech & AI Fellow and a member of UNESCO’s Women for Ethical AI (W4EAI) initiative. She uses these platforms to champion AI education for women and girls, ensuring that Africa’s digital future is inclusive, ethical, and locally driven. Her voice is increasingly influential in global tech forums, where she brings both technical depth and a grounded understanding of Africa’s digital realities.
