
Throwback to when Zimbabwe introduced the STEM education program in January 2016 a pivotal moment that reshaped the country’s educational landscape. This initiative marked a deliberate shift from traditional rote learning to a competency-based approach focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, aimed at preparing Zimbabwean students for the demands of the 21st-century economy.
Back then, Zimbabwe launched STEM at the Advanced level with a vision to accelerate industrial development and socio-economic transformation. It was a landmark decision fueled by the 2012 Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy, which empowered education ministries to modernize the curriculum. Over 4,000 students enrolled in the inaugural year, many from rural areas previously sidelined in such programs, supported by a significant $4 million scholarship fund to reward outstanding performance and broaden access. The introduction of STEM was more than an academic reform; it was a national rallying call for innovation and creativity, embedding problem-solving and entrepreneurship skills crucial for Zimbabwe’s growth. It symbolized Zimbabwe’s aspiration to nurture a new generation of thinkers, innovators, and leaders capable of driving the country’s industrialization agenda from classrooms to the global stage.
