Our #WCW today is Fungai Ndemera, a Zimbabwean-born tech entrepreneur transforming healthcare in the United Kingdom. Born in Mhondoro and raised in Rimuka, Kadoma, Ndemera’s journey began with humble roots and a determination to serve. She moved to Harare before relocating to the UK, where she initially worked as a nurse. It was during these early years in healthcare that she began to envision solutions that would later reshape patient care across the UK.

In 2001, while still working as a nurse, Ndemera co-founded The Flame Lily Healthcare, marking her entry into entrepreneurship. A decade later, she launched Independent Care Solutions, and in 2016, she founded CheckUp Health — a groundbreaking AI-driven digital platform designed to support remote patient monitoring and primary healthcare delivery. The platform, approved by NHS England, empowers clinicians and GP practices with tools that streamline workflows and enhance decision-making.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ndemera’s innovation proved critical. With support from Innovate UK’s Sustainable Innovation Fund, she developed remote monitoring modules that allowed patients to be tracked safely from home. A subsequent study reported that CheckUp Health saved the NHS an estimated £4 million — a testament to the platform’s efficiency and impact during a national crisis.

Ndemera’s work is rooted in addressing health inequalities, particularly among racially diverse communities. Her platform includes multilingual capabilities and cultural engagement metrics, ensuring that healthcare delivery is inclusive and responsive to the needs of underrepresented groups. This approach has positioned CheckUp Health as a vital tool in tackling long-term conditions and improving access to care.
Beyond her ventures, Ndemera is a published author, angel investor, and mentor. She contributed to The Voice in the Shadow, a book profiling 51 influential Black women in UK tech, and authored The All Dots Digital Transformation Model. She also co-authored Cultivating Your IT Factor, further cementing her role as a thought leader in digital innovation and business transformation.

Today, Fungai Ndemera stands as a powerful example of resilience, vision, and leadership. From her early days in Zimbabwe to becoming a respected figure in UK tech and healthcare, she continues to inspire a new generation of women in STEM, entrepreneurship, and social impact. Her story is not just one of success — it’s a blueprint for building systems that serve, include, and uplift.
