According to wisevoter.com, Zimbabwe has the highest alcohol consumption rate in the world currently. According to the poll, each Zimbabwean drinks a staggering 62,8 litres annually, followed by Tunisians at 36,6 litres. We all know Zimbabweans know how to have a good time but this came as a shock, at least to me.

Alcohol has been a part of society for as far as records go. Alcohol brings people together and is even a part of religion. Jesus’ first miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding. Churches like Roman Catholic take alter wine with their communion as a remembrance of the blood of Christ. Those who practise ATR or Indegenous Religon also brew traditional beer to appease their ancestors. The beverage is even used in cooking and baking , for instance brandy gives fruit cake it’s longevity and distinct taste.

However all this is not why Zimbabwe was ranked highest. Social drinking is on a rise in Zimbabwe, especially now with the festive season in bloom. Is this a cause for concern or merely a good time? We all know that excessive drinking does have adverse effects on health and can even lead to death. We are all advised to drink responsibly and don’t drink and drive. Call a taxi. Your future you will thank you.
