Abdul Fatawu, the winger from Leicester City, has declined an invitation to play for Ghana in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Fatawu’s decision came just before he received a red card during Leicester City’s 3-1 defeat against Coventry City, coinciding with the start of AFCON. As a result of the red card, Fatawu is expected to face a suspension of almost a month from playing.

Representing their country at AFCON is a dream for many African footballers, but Fatawu seems to prioritize club football over international duty. The young player, who is on loan from Sporting, was sent off for a reckless tackle on Coventry’s Jake Bidwell just before halftime. Unless an appeal is made, Fatawu will serve a three-game suspension, meaning he will miss two league matches and an FA Cup game.

He will be absent from the games against Ipswich on January 22, the FA Cup clash during January 27 or 28, and the Championship match against Stoke City on February 3. Fatawu is expected to return to the lineup on February 10 against Watford.

Reports from My Joy Online suggest that Fatawu had discussions with manager Chris Hughton before deciding to opt out of the Black Stars squad. If Ghana were to reach the final, scheduled for February 11, Fatawu could have potentially played for his country.

Fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment following his red card. This season, Fatawu has made 24 appearances for Leicester City, scoring two goals, according to Transfermarkt.
