Zimbabwe Under-19s kick-started their preparations for the ICC Under-19 Men’s World Cup 2024 with an encouraging seven-wicket victory over Ireland Under-19s in their first warm-up match in Pretoria. In response, Zimbabwe got off to a strong start with Ryan Kamwemba (51) and Panashe Taruvinga (28) putting on a 91-run opening partnership. However, the team suffered a mini-collapse, losing three wickets for just three runs. But Campbell MacMillan (49*) and Ronak Patel (21*) combined for an unbroken 73-run stand for the fourth wicket. Rain interrupted the match, and Zimbabwe emerged as winners by 27 runs according to the Duckworth-Lewis method.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe came agonizingly close to victory in the first Twenty20 international against Sri Lanka in Colombo. After being put into bat, Zimbabwe struggled on a challenging pitch against the Sri Lankan spinners. Tinashe Kamunhukamwe played a quick cameo of 26 off 18 balls, while Sikandar Raza (62) anchored the innings and propelled Zimbabwe to 143\/5 in their 20 overs.
Despite a modest target, Zimbabwe’s bowlers caused some surprises. They had Sri Lanka on the ropes, but the hosts managed to hold on and win off the final ball. Raza’s all-round efforts with bat and ball were not enough to secure victory for Zimbabwe, who will be disappointed to come so close but fall short.
