The Government plans to introduce Robotics and Coding as important subjects in schools as part of efforts to equip students with essential skills in the face of rapidly advancing technology.

Technologies such as drones, robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning are becoming increasingly integrated into everyday life worldwide. Experts emphasize the need for authentic technology-focused education opportunities for young learners to engage, learn, and lead in these fields. Charleston Trust Primary School in Bulawayo, located in the Nkulumane suburb, is at the forefront of this movement, introducing coding as a learning area for Grade 1 students starting this term.

By teaching coding, the school aims to create future entrepreneurs who can develop technological products for Zimbabwe and beyond, while also earning income. The school’s ICT laboratory is already well-equipped with desktops, laptops, and tablets for practical coding lessons. The executive director, Mr. Apros Tendaupenyu, highlighted the importance of ICT skills in today’s technology-driven world and the need to introduce coding from an early age to provide students with a solid foundation.

The Government, through the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz), is already supporting the development of similar Robotics and Coding projects in secondary schools. Tynwald High School in Harare is one of the beneficiaries, having achieved excellence in Robotics competitions for over seven years. The school is also set to participate in the First Global Robotics Competition in Milan.
