‎Zimbabwean dancer Tanaka ‘Glitch’ Sakala hailing from Gweru, has brought pride to Zimbabwe by winning a gold medal in contemporary dance at the renowned Havana competition in Cuba.

Glitch’s captivating performance impressed the judges and earned him the top prize in this highly competitive event, making him a hero at home and overseas.

On Saturday, Glitch performed alongside dancers from various countries at the Havana dance competition. His thrilling performance stood out among competitors from many different countries.

Speaking to The Herald, Glitch acknowledged that his path to international acclaim was not without financial hurdles. He sought assistance from the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, who supported him with flight tickets, visa processing, meals, and accommodation. Above all, he expressed gratitude to a higher power for making his dream a reality.

In addition to financial challenges, Glitch initially faced skepticism from his family and friends regarding his chosen career path. However, in 2023, he received recognition from the international dance organization named IDO, which motivated him further. He has been working as a dance instructor in Harare and Gweru, aiming to empower the youth through dance.

Disheartened by previous failures, Glitch felt frustrated, but an opportunity arose when Ballet Beyond Borders presented itself. He auditioned online and was chosen as the sole representative from Africa, competing against dance crews, solos, and open category participants. This marked the turning point in his journey.

Hailing from Mkoba, Glitch has performed at various events, including the National Independence Day Commemorations and high-profile performances in Gweru. Through his work as a dance instructor in Harare and Gweru, he aims to inspire and empower youth through the art of dance.
