Donkey thief dead after mob justice attack. Around 20 residents of Dumba village near Beitbridge are reportedly involved in the alleged kidnapping and torture that led to the death of a fellow villager, Austin Sibanda. Sibanda had been accused of stealing a neighbor’s donkey, resulting in a brutal attack. According to a police report, he was subjected to various forms of torture, including being beaten with a hammer, having his genitals pinched with pliers, being whipped with switches, and even having a scorpion thrown into his shirt.

Sibanda managed to share the details of his ordeal with his grandmother, Esnath Moyo, before succumbing to his injuries. It is alleged that the police in Beitbridge showed negligence and carelessness by keeping Sibanda in custody for two days without providing him with medical attention. His relatives are questioning why the police did not arrest the vigilantes when they brought Sibanda to the police station, as it was evident that he had been severely assaulted.

Melson Shoko, a relative of Sibanda residing in the United Kingdom, expressed his frustration and grief over the situation. He criticized the lack of due diligence on the part of the police, stating that Sibanda maintained his innocence until his last breath and provided the names of his attackers. Shoko also emphasized that Sibanda was not taken to the hospital despite his deteriorating health and could have potentially been saved if provided with proper medical attention.

An investigation by NewsDay revealed that there is no official record of the assault Sibanda endured, despite his visible injuries. Furthermore, he was reportedly taken to court but declared unfit for any legal process due to his physical condition. Sibanda ultimately passed away at home, four days after the attack. Shoko noted the potential consequences of the scorpion sting Sibanda experienced, explaining that it can lead to severe health issues, including arrhythmia, unconsciousness, or even death.

Following Sibanda’s death, the police launched a search for the vigilantes involved in the incident. Four individuals from the mob identified by the deceased have been arrested thus far. The investigation into the case is currently being handled by the Beitbridge Rural Police.
