On January 23, 2019, Oliver Mtukudzi sadly passed away at the age of 66 after a long battle with diabetes mellitus. His departure left a void in the hearts of many who admired his talent and revered his contributions to the Zimbabwean and global music scene.

Hailing from Highfield, a humble neighborhood in Salisbury (now Harare), Zimbabwe, Mtukudzi’s musical journey began in 1977 when he joined the Wagon Wheels band. Joining forces with Thomas Mapfumo and fellow guitarist James Chimombe, Mtukudzi and his bandmates were afforded a rare opportunity by Paul Tangi Mhova Mkondo, an African nationalist and music promoter.

Mkondo generously provided financial support and resources to the group, allowing them to perform at Club Mutanga (Pungwe), the only nightclub segregated for black people under Rhodesia’s discriminatory policies. It was here that they gained recognition, with their single “Dzandimomotera” achieving gold status, and Tuku’s debut album following suit, delighting audiences and solidifying his place in the music industry.

Mtukudzi’s unique husky voice became the hallmark of his music, propelling him to become the most recognized voice to emerge from Zimbabwe onto the international stage. His soulful melodies resonated with listeners across Africa and beyond, earning him a devoted following. As a member of Zimbabwe’s KoreKore group, with “Nzou Samanyanga” as his totem, Dr. Mtukudzi showcased his versatile talent by singing in the nation’s dominant Shona language, as well as incorporating Ndebele and English into his music. This fusion of styles and languages gave birth to Tuku Music, instantly recognizable and adored by fans worldwide.

Notably, Mtukudzi was not just an icon in his solo career but also made significant contributions as part of Mahube, Southern Africa’s “supergroup.” Collaborating with other renowned musicians, he further showcased his artistry and commitment to promoting African music excellence.

Beyond his musical talents, Mtukudzi played an essential role in raising awareness about social issues through his lyrics. His thought-provoking songs touched on topics such as love, peace, unity, and the struggles faced by ordinary people. He used his platform to advocate for positive change and social justice, leaving a lasting impact on his listeners.

Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi’s music remains etched in our hearts and continues to inspire generations to come. His artistry, dedication, and contributions to the music industry will always be celebrated and cherished. As we remember this music icon five years since his passing, let us continue to appreciate the gift he shared with us and honor his memory by keeping his music alive.

Rest in peace, Dr. Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi. Your music will forever be a source of comfort, joy, and inspiration to us all.
