CCC Requests Chamisa to Hand Over Party Assets, Funds, and Donations. The interim committee currently in charge of Zimbabwe’s opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has formally requested Nelson Chamisa, the party’s former leader, to surrender the party’s financial records, accounts, and assets following his resignation. Chamisa, who narrowly lost the 2023 presidential election to Emmerson Mnangagwa, announced his departure from the party he founded in 2021 and stated that he would soon reveal his next steps.

Chamisa’s decision came after a rival faction within the CCC, led by self-proclaimed secretary general Sengezo Tshabangu, recalled and replaced several of Chamisa’s allies in parliament and local councils. While more by-elections are scheduled for February 3, 2024, around 23 lawmakers sympathetic to Chamisa have been prohibited by the courts from participating.

Mbuso Siso, the treasurer of the CCC faction, informed The NewsHawks, an online news publication, that he intended to contact Chamisa to officially confirm his resignation and request the party’s financial and donation records. Siso explained that the nine-member interim steering committee would convene urgently to discuss Chamisa’s announcement and determine the next course of action.

Siso expressed disappointment that Chamisa had chosen to publicly disassociate himself from the CCC without formally notifying the interim committee responsible for running the party. He emphasized that as the acting Treasurer General, he sought the records of the party’s finances, accounts, and expenditure for transparency and accountability purposes. Siso also mentioned the importance of clarifying whether the party possessed any assets that should remain under its ownership after Chamisa’s departure.

The CCC’s interim committee consists of Dingilizwe Tshuma, former legislator for the Entumbane-Njube constituency in Bulawayo, as chair; Albert Mhlanga, former Pumula MP, as deputy; Tshabangu, as secretary-general; Khaliphani Phugeni, in charge of information; Sikhululekile Moyo, interim chairperson for women; Nomvula Mguni, former proportional representation MP; Siso, as treasurer; and Benoni Ncube, representing youth.

The committee, which implemented the recalls leading to Chamisa’s resignation, asserts its legitimacy as the governing body of the party and is committed to moving the CCC forward despite the challenges posed by what it describes as the intrusion of impostors and fraudsters.
