Chinhoyi University set to export 30 tonnes of rock melon to Dubai. Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) is set to export approximately 25 to 30 tonnes of rock melon to Dubai, United Arab Emirates this year. With the assistance of ZimTrade, the university has already exported eight tonnes of rock melon to Dubai as part of the national trade development and promotion cluster programme.

Initially starting with two hectares, CUT plans to expand their export efforts to five hectares. Oswel Ushe, the farm general manager at CUT, explained that the university is embracing innovative agriculture and is already preparing for the next production cycle by the end of February. He noted that the first production cycle was successful, with some products still awaiting sale.

The university has already exported eight tonnes of rock melon, with more currently in refrigerated transit. Their goal for this year is to export approximately 25 to 30 tonnes, and they have received interest from a single buyer who expressed willingness to purchase up to 100 tonnes.

Ushe mentioned that the planting cycle this year will be on a 10-interval basis, except during the frost months of May and June. The number of intervals will depend on the crop demand throughout the year.

CUT is aiming to expand their farming operations to five hectares and will assess the market to determine the most profitable planting intervals. They are grateful for the support received, as it has played a crucial role in the success of their project.

Additionally, CUT is engaged in a recycling initiative where organic waste is utilized to feed black soldier fly maggots, which are then used as a protein supplement for animals on the university’s premises. Fish production is also an area of focus for the university.
