Foreigners seeking citizenship to pay $5,000

The Zimbabwean Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage has announced new fees for obtaining various identity documents. Foreigners seeking citizenship to pay $5,000 for both adults and minors on the grounds of permanent residence. Those seeking restoration of citizenship after renouncing it will need to pay a fee of US$1,000.

The fees for birth and death records have also been updated. The issuance of an initial birth certificate for children under 6 years old will remain free of charge. For children over the age of six, the fee will be US$5. The initial death certificate fee is set at US$2. Certified copies of birth or death certificates will cost US$5, and extracts from birth or death records will be charged at US$2 each.

Making changes to a name in the register or correcting errors will cost US$5. However, errors originating from the Registrar-General’s Department will be corrected free of charge. Changing a name by notarial deed or through the Registrar-General’s Office will cost US$50 and US$5, respectively. Authentication and re-registration for legitimacy purposes will both cost US$20. Urgent birth or death certificates will have a fee of US$10, while an external birth certificate will be priced at US$15. Initial non-citizen birth certificates and duplicates will cost US$10 and US$25, respectively.

New fees have also been introduced for citizenship-related services. Searching a set of records will incur a charge of US$10, and photocopying documents or pages will be priced at US$0.10 per page. Temporary Travel Documents will be strictly charged at US$40 cash only. Certificates for confirmation or registration of citizenship by descent will be US$50 each for both minors and adults. Renunciation of Zimbabwean citizenship will cost US$200, while restoration of citizenship by descent will be US$50 and by other means will be US$1,000. Initial registration as a citizen for foreigners applying based on permanent residence will be US$5,000.

The new fees also apply to brand registration and transfer, with a registration fee of US$5 and a duplicate brand certificate fee of US$10.

The National Registration Department has adjusted its fees as well. Searching records for any document, entry, or other record will cost US$2, while fingerprint clearance will be priced at US$1 and urgent fingerprint clearance at US$5. Photocopying services will be US$0.20 per page. Initial registration for individuals aged 16 to 18 remains free, but for those 18 and above, the fee will be US$2. If a person applies for a synthetic polythene identity document while already possessing a metal identity document, the fee will be US$20 for residents and US$30 for non-residents. Correcting errors made by the applicant on a metal or synthetic or polythene identity document will cost US$25, while errors originating from the Department will be corrected free of charge.
