Ngonidzaishe Makusha, born in Chitungwiza in 1987, is a Zimbabwean sprinter and long jumper renowned for his exceptional talent and achievements in the realm of athletics. Makusha etched his name in sports history by setting records in both the 100m sprint and long jump events during the fiercely competitive 2011 NCAA Division 1 Athletics Championships in Iowa. His stellar performances at this prestigious event gave him a rare distinction as one of only five athletes to triumph in both the 100m race and long jump at an NCAA championship. In recognition of his outstanding athletic prowess, Makusha was honored with ‘The Bowerman’ title, a distinguished accolade presented to the top collegiate track and field athlete annually.

Makusha rose to prominence at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he came within a centimeter of collecting Zimbabwe’s first medal in track and field events in the longjump at the quadrennial games. Later, the Chitungwiza-born 100 and 200m sprinter migrated to the United States, setting Florida State University alight with his speed and thus winning the Bowerman Award, as well as longjump bronze at the 2011 IAAF World Athletics Championship in South Korea.

Unfortunately a raptured Achilles during a routine training session in 2012 stalled his promising career as he would miss both the London and Rio Games. This did not stop him and Makusha continued to push in his career.

Makusha has proudly represented Zimbabwe on the global stage, notably achieving a notable fourth-place finish in the long jump final at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. His athletic journey began in Seke, Mandedza High School, Zimbabwe, where he showcased promise early on. Makusha’s dedication and talent were evident as he achieved commendable results in various events, including long jump distances and impressive sprint times.
