A 26-year-old South African national, Cuan Reed Govender, from Durban has been fined $300 after being found in possession of ammunition at the airport.

Additionally, Govender was arrested at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on suspicion of being the infamous John Doe who reported a bomb threat at Victoria Falls International Airport last week. Govender’s arrest was confirmed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson, George Charamba.

Airport authorities detected bullets in Govender’s luggage, prompting an investigation that is now a focal point of state security operations. “Our security services have identified the individual known as John Doe as Cuan Reed Govender, a national of a neighboring country,” said Charamba on X. “In the interest of ongoing operations, we will not provide further details at this time. We appreciate Zimbabweans for remaining calm during the investigation. We expect to conclude the matter soon.”

The landing at Victoria Falls International Airport was suspended for a significant part of Friday morning after an unsigned email alleging a planned bomb blast was sent to immigration officials. Mnangagwa had to return to Harare, as he was scheduled to officially close a ceremony in the resort town, and two private commercial planes were rerouted to Zambia.

No official statement has been issued regarding the authenticity of Govender’s communication or his responsibility for it.
