A 28-year-old kombi driver, Alexander Tapiwa Kaseke, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for reckless driving in central Harare. The incident occurred on April 29, 2025, when Kaseke was reversing a Nissan Caravan along Robert Mugabe Road near Angwa Street and panicked upon seeing police approaching. In a desperate attempt to escape, he jumped out of the moving vehicle.
The vehicle crashed into a traffic light pole, causing it to fall and damage two parked cars, a Kia Picanto and a Honda Fit. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the two vehicles suffered significant damage. Kaseke, a holder of a valid driver’s license, was found guilty of reckless driving and brought to justice.
Kaseke was sentenced to 36 months in prison, with 12 months suspended for five years on condition of good behavior. Additionally, his driver’s license was canceled, and he is barred from driving for 24 months. The sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to traffic laws.
