2009 Comrades Marathon

Stephen Muzhingi is one of Zimbabwe’s greatest sporting legends, celebrated for his extraordinary achievements in ultramarathon running. Born in Zimbabwe, Muzhingi’s journey to international stardom is a true rags-to-riches story. He grew up running barefoot in the rural areas, and before his rise to fame, he worked as a barber in Chitungwiza. Despite these humble beginnings, he went on to conquer some of the world’s toughest ultra-distance races.

Muzhingi made history by winning South Africa’s prestigious Comrades Marathon three times in a row, from 2009 to 2011. This 89-kilometre race is considered one of the most challenging in the world, and Muzhingi became the first person in the modern era to achieve this remarkable hat trick. His dominance in the event earned him the nickname “King of the Comrades.” In 2012, he added another feather to his cap by winning the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town. This victory made him only the second person ever to hold both the Comrades and Two Oceans titles at the same time.

Muzhingi’s personal best marathon time is 2:19:10, and he has run 50 kilometres in an impressive 2:49:56. His success brought him national recognition, and he was named Zimbabwe Sports Person of the Year in 2011. Despite his international achievements, Muzhingi has remained humble and committed to giving back to his community, investing part of his prize money in supporting sports development in Zimbabwe.
