A Zimbabwean former healthcare assistant has been sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for sexually abusing a vulnerable patient at a secure mental health unit in Colchester, England. Nelson Ncube, 57, admitted to two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a person whose mental disorder impeded choice. The offences occurred between late 2020 and early 2023 while Ncube was employed to monitor the patient, who had been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Ipswich Crown Court heard that Ncube exploited blind spots within the unit to carry out the abuse, despite the patient’s room being near the nurses’ station and under surveillance. He led the patient to secluded areas such as a storage room and toilets, where the assaults took place. The prosecution revealed that the abuse escalated from unsolicited physical contact to overt sexual acts, including the exchange of explicit photographs.
Judge Richard Kelly condemned Ncube’s conduct as a grave breach of trust, describing his attempt to blame the victim as evidence of a “warped sense of responsibility.” Despite having no prior convictions, Ncube’s expression of shame and remorse did not prevent a custodial sentence. The case has raised serious concerns about safeguarding procedures and the protection of vulnerable individuals in mental health care settings.
